HISTORY

SAGAY CITY


 Sagay City is a third class city in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 140,740 people.Sagay can be easily identified in the map of Negros Occidental, because of its "ice-cream cone" shape sliced from the northern tip of Negros. 
It is bounded in the north by Asuncion Pass and the Visayan Sea; the municipality of Talisay and Calatrava in the south; cities of Cadiz and Silay in the west and the municipality of Escalante and Toboso in the east.The name of the city comes from the semi-spherical shell called "sigay", which can be found in the area.




FESTIVAL

SINIGAYAN FESTIVAL


Sinigayan is a convivial celebration of the Sagaynon heritage by the gentle, joyful and hardworking people of Sagay. The word is derived from 'sigay', the name of a hardy, bright-shelled mollusk that abounds in the sandy shores of Sagay. The super-abundance of sigay in the coastal waters of the place in the old days betrayed the presence of marine riches that attracted settlers form other parts of Negros and from Cebu. This abundance caused the settlements to prosper into villages then barrios.





HISTORICAL PLACES

VITO CHURCH


Vito Church in Sagay City is the Shrine of St. Vincent Ferrer. The church was established during the religious administration of Negros by the Recollect Friars. The first Recollect missionaries were assigned in Vito in 1898 but the church and convent was constructed only in the 1930s. The religious tradition of palapak is still being practiced at Vito Church. The base of a small statue of St. Vincent Ferrer is lightly pressed on the head of a devotee. 





DELICACY

PIAYA



Piaya is a flat unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar. It is a famous delicacy in the “sugar capital” of the country, Negros Occidental. Aside from the plain traditional taste, flavored piayas such as ube (purple yam), mango, rum and more are also now available. These are sold in pasalubong centers all over the province.

Sagay Marine Reserve



Sagay Marine Reserve is now recognized nationally and internationally as one of the mostsuccessful marine conservation programs in the Philippines and has won for Sagay in 1997 the prestigious Gawad Galing Pook Award which declared it one of the Ten Most Outstanding and Innovative Government programs in the Philippines. In 1997, SMR won Sagay the prestigious Gawad Galing Pook Award which declared it as one of the Ten Most Outstanding & Innovative Government Programs in the country and was also awarded in 2006 as Best Eco-Tourism Destination in Western Visayas.

The Museo Sang Bata sa Negros
The museum has an interesting whale-shaped edifice and is located at the port area of Brgy.Old Sagay, 5.5 km. from the city proper. MSBN has four permanent exhibit areas: The Marine Story, ABCs of Smoking, Las Islas Filipina and the Hampanganan toy room which features the folk toy collection of Ms. Mara Montelibano, representing more than 50 countries. Hampanganan also showcases the promotional toys of McDonald's donated by Mr. Eusebio "Butch" Lopez and the Beanie Babies Collection of Monica and Alex Kazlausky. Through these exhibits, MSBN seeks to awaken and stimulate the creative and intellectual potential of Negrense children.




CABRIN REEF

Carbin Reef is a huge, tongue-shaped, white sandbar 15km northeast of Old Sagay and is bounded on the North by Asuncion Pass and the Visayan Sea. It is centered on the 32,000-hectare Sagay Marine Reserve.
The sanctuary was established in 1999 and is abundant with a wide variety of underwater species such as thriving coral formations, the occasional turtles and large schools of fish. Above the water, the reef looks merely like a strip of sand but below the surface is a wealth of natural beauty.
